International Travel Medical Insurance - What Makes a Good Plan
One of the important things to
include when traveling is travel medical insurance. It should be on everyone's
travel checklist. No one plans to be injured or ill while traveling or spending
time in another country, but it can happen. If you are in another country and
need medical attention, doctors and hospitals usually want to be paid. They
know that if they are not paid, there is almost no chance that they will be
paid seriously. This means that a traveler should take this seriously.
Travel medical insurance is not the
same as travel insurance. The two are often confused. Diets may have similar
and overlapping benefits, but the purpose of these diets is not the same.
Medical plans should cover medical expenses with travel and travel allowances.
Travel insurance is to cover the cost of the trip in whole or in part if a
person cannot participate in the trip. The reason for not being on the trip
could be due to a car accident on the way. This could be due to a strike on a
cruise ship. Travel insurance covers the loss of money spent on the trip or
cruise if certain covered events occur.
Travel agents usually offer travel
insurance. Insurance agents who offer international medical insurance may also
offer travel coverage plans. An insurance license is required to offer
international travel health insurance. International health and medical
insurance is a specialty of the insurance industry. Few agents handle this. As
with any specialty, finding a knowledgeable and experienced international
insurance agent is very important as not all plans are the same. Health
insurance plans for international travel are intended for travel outside of a
person's home country.
Travel medical insurance plans
generally fall into two types. These are regular compensation or benefit plans
that provide specified dollar benefits for specified medical services. For
example, a scheduled benefit program might pay $ 50 for a doctor and $ 1,000
per day for hospital costs. Planned benefit plans are frequently used by
visitors to the United States because this type costs less and with older
visitors, over 70, in fact covers more than more comprehensive plans. Full
plans are the best choice if possible for visitors to the United States under
the age of 70.
There are also plans which are like
the main health insurance plans. These plans offer wider and less restricted
coverage. Both types of plans generally exclude pre-existing health conditions
or have limits on coverage for pre-existing health conditions. It is best to
consult an agent who is experienced and who manages international insurance
plans on a daily basis so that you can give you good advice tailored to your
situation.
A good travel health and medical
insurance plan would include the following benefits.
o Policy Medical Maximum - Plan
choices can range from $ 50,000 to $ 1 million. The maximum medical available
is generally limited to $ 50,000 or less for people aged 70 or over.
o Deductibles - these are usually per
insurance period and may be limited to 3 per family. Deductibles can be $ 0, $
100, $ 250, $ 500, $ 1,000 or $ 2,500
o Coinsurance - this is the amount an
insured pays for eligible medical expenses before the insurance coverage pays
any benefits. The coinsurance can be 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% or 50% of the next $
5,000 to $ 10,000 in medical expenses after the deductible is reached. Once
this goal is met, the plan would then pay 100% of eligible medical expenses up
to the selected medical maximum.
o Plans include coverage for room and
board costs in the hospital
o Plans include coverage of local
ambulance costs
o Plans include coverage of intensive
care unit costs
o Plans include coverage of
outpatient treatment costs
o Plans include coverage for
physiotherapy costs
o The plans include coverage for
other medical expenses as stated in the plan. Take a look at these and what is
excluded
o Hospital allowance - this is an
additional benefit that pays a certain amount for days spent in a hospital.
o Coverage for a dental emergency -
If the insured has an accident that injures their teeth or
o Emergency Medical Evacuation
Coverage - this benefit covers transportation to the nearest medical facility
qualified to handle your life-threatening situation. This does not mean that
the person will be returned to the United States by plane. There are ways to
cover this, but it's a whole different thing. This advantage is often
misinterpreted. Better to ask specifically.
o Emergency medical meeting coverage
- a benefit to provide transportation, accommodation and meals to a family
member or other person who may also join the insured.
o Repatriation coverage - this is the
return of the remains to a person's home in the event of death. This advantage
is often misinterpreted. It applies in the event of death. It is best, if it is
not clear, to ask specifically as for an emergency medical evacuation.
o Home Country Incidental Coverage -
this is coverage for the time you may be spending at home while traveling. For
example, a person can travel abroad for six months. He or she might be home for
a few weeks in the middle of the trip. Accidental home country coverage is what
would cover those two weeks
o End-of-Trip Coverage - this is the
coverage you can have after your trip is finished and you return home. This
varies widely by plan and can be very important in how an accident or illness
while traveling is covered when you get home.
o The benefit period - this is the
period during which the plan will cover the insured person (s). In addition to
the benefit period, plans should also have end-of-trip coverage.
o Medical expenses from an act of
terrorism - This is coverage if an injury is caused by a terrorist attack. The
plans that cover generally exclude nuclear, chemical or biological events.
o Accidental Death and Dismemberment
Coverage - this pays if someone is killed in an accident, loses a limb or loses
their sight.
o Natural Disaster Compensation -
additional amounts to help cover the costs of alternative accommodation in the
event of a natural disaster
o Coverage for dangerous athletic
cyclists - many plans exclude sports and activities that they consider
dangerous. Some plans have the option of covering these sports and activities.
It's a good idea to check the exclusions and what the optional jumper will
cover.
o Travel Coverage and Additional
Assistance - may include trip interruption, loss of baggage, loss of documents,
travel assistance, travel alerts, political evacuation, contact details for
doctors, lawyers and replacement prescriptions and proof of insurance visa
letter for countries that require this
o Plan renewal - Some insurance plans
are neither renewable nor extendable after the plan is in effect. Some
insurance plans may be extended during your trip. It is important to verify
this.
Health insurance for international
travel is an important and valuable part of safe and secure travel. It is best
to familiarize yourself with it when you are calm and don't need it at that
time, perhaps before you go on a trip. Traveling can be confusing. You could be
on a long flight. You may be in a different time zone. You might be in a
country where you don't speak the language. Hope you don't get sick or injured,
but if you do, it's important to have the best travel health insurance you can get.
